I need ideas on how to build a "…

I would like to build a shelf approx. 4 in. thick utilizing moulding on the front with a good amount of detail. It will span approx.12 ft. wall to wall and needs to be 6 in. deep. I had in mind for it to look like the shelf of a fireplace mantel but could find no ideas in FW. I am a novice woodworker and just don’t know where to begin. Do I build a box and add crown mould to the front? Any advice or referrals would be appreciated, Sincerely,
Nancy

yes, you build what's called a torsion box and apply the molding to the front. you can build a ribbed frame of 1/2" plywood and skin each side with the same. stagger the seam joints at the top and bottom. recess the frame 7/8" off the back, left and right walls, and hang the thing on 3/4" cleats secured to studs in the wall.
*Thank you for your reply. I need additional help understanding what a torsion box is and what a ribbed frame is. Again, thanks, Nancy

*Nancy, If you're looking for additional info on torsion boxes, find a copy of April issue of Popular Woodworking, p.40. Shelf plans in this article are probably a little more elaborate than what you're looking for; turn your ribs on edge instead of flat. Their website is http://www.popwood.com; but so far, Feb. issue is still posted. When April issue goes up, it may feature this article.
