I’d like to see some articles on gun stock carving, checkering, etc.
How do I contact Fine Woodworking to suggest some topics that seem to overlooked, like gun stock finishing, checkering, carving, etc.

If you go down the list of "Recent Discussions" on the left side of the page, you will see a heading for "Web and Magazine Feedback", that is where to make suggestions. Another way is to find the how to contact section for the magazine, usually at the top of most pages, and send an e-mail directly to the editors.
steph,
many years ago i got to watch nora hall french checker the cheeks of a very expensivie shot gun. a sharp v-chisel, mallet and steady hands were what she used. her technique allowed for no error. maybe an email to her website would get you a bit of what you're looking for.

Sometimes during lunch I look through old issues of FWW. Today in Jan 94 issue I found a review of Gunstock Woods and Other Fine Timbers by Virvil Davis. Gives his address as 228 Brian Drive Slidell LA, 70458, and phone as 504-649-3190. Review said there are chapters on checkering, decorating, and finishing. Might find a used copy?
Gunstocks and other fine woods
My uncle, Virgil M Davis, wrote this book. He has been dead for many years. His only child, ( my cousin ) , is hunting several copies of her fathers' book. She is willing to pay just about anything to get them. She's wanting a copy for each of her kids and grandkids. So if anyone has a copy they would be willing to part with; PLEASE email me !! This is a standing request. Thanks, Connie Smith, Odessa, MO
UPDATE to my previous post from Feb 2012, I am still looking for several copies of this book. My email is [email protected] June 2020
