I plan to build a plank table for a log cabin in Minnesota, using burr oak cut on the property. Already have some pretty boards ready for the top. The big question is, what to do for legs. I really want to work with wood in the round, and possibly with roots — and ALSO want a solid servicable dining table. Have been looking for ideas, but can’t find many good images. Don’t want the legs to be too massive, just rustic like old furniture from the Adirondacs.
Any idea where to look?
Also, are those pencil sharpener tennon cutters a good way to go?

Joe,
You might look at rustic handrails for some inspiration.

Get hold of a book: "One Man's Wilderness" This is the story of Dick Proenneke who built a log cabin and furnishings in the wilds of Alaska. He made tables, chair, the cabin door, etc all from local trees using only hand tools. No power. The book is loaded with photos. There is also a dvd or video out now that shows him working. He filmed it himself, since he was alone.
Interesting ideas, thanks. I'll look fot that book and video, and will alsolookand handrails. had never thought of either.

Hi Joe,
We have a few photos of Rustic furniture in our free online gallery. Here's a link. Maybe those might spark some ideas. You can also browse the Tables section of the gallery, we've got hundreds of photos in there in all sorts of styles.

Fine Woodworking
I have been thinking for a while about doing something with roots for a table base. My idea is to find a decent trunk section of an oak or walnut and to cut down the trunk to form a wedge about 4" thick or so that includes the root out the bottom. The root section would form a 'foot' at the base and could sort of creep out from under the table. I think this would make a very interesting looking table for a porch or patio or even a rustic cabin. Never worked with trunk sections like that so I am sure there will be some challenges, but I also think the end product would be worth it.

Thanks, Natt, I'll have a look. Interesting concept, Andy.
