Greg, I need more info.
Can you describe the saw and handle? Do you cut on the PULL stroke?
(OR push?)
Are the teeth pointing toward your hand ?(Or, away?) What's the length of the blade? Do the blades have a cross pin on either end? (Or, holes like a hacksaw?) Manufacturer's name? Old ? Antique? Let me know.
How was the old handle attached? Is the metal stub flat metal bar?Round?
Is the stub pointed? Riveted? Handle Wood? Metal? Plastic?
Steinmetz.

it's a fret saw so the blades are 5 inch scroll saw blades without pins. it's a new saw and the missing handle was wood. the protruding metal part that the old handle attached to is about 2 inches long and 1/8 thick and 3/8 wide. i generally cut on the pull stroke.

I think what you describe is a Jeweler's saw (Of which I have at least six) To make a handle to attach to the flat tang, start with a square blank of the length you'll need, (only, longer.)
You will cut the extra off later. Mahogany or maple would be fine. The blank should be square in cross section as you'll
be cutting an 1/8 " wide dado across the center line of the blank and deep enough to 'Bed' the tang plus at least 1/4" deeper for a spline (Which will be glued into the dado after the tang is bedded.)
You can use a table saw to cut the slot for a snug fit for the tang. Before any further cutting, dry fit the shank and spline. Remove the tang and spline and reserve. reduce the four long sides to the required final width on the table saw.Cut the length of the thinned blank to fit comfortably in your hand. You might want to round off sharp corners with a plane (or,) spokeshave now. The assembly is as follows: Insert tang / apply glue for splines (full length spline for bottom of handle and short spline for rear of handle. When glue drys, Drill one cross hole through the center of tang and the handle. A # 30 drill bit will be fine for ####1/8"pop rivet. sand the whole handle and spray high gloss clear lacquer Good luck, Steinmetz.
alright then! thank you, that's what i'll do.
