looks like it maybe beech?
Looks like European beech. Could be others.
When asking for wood identification, being very specific about your location and anything you know about where it may have come from is helpful.

Thanks all for the helpful insight.
If my memory serves me correctly in Eric Sloane books "Reverence for Wood" he spoke of the sycamore and I am paraphrasing. The mighty sycamore tree in winter look like dancers from far east with their arms stretched out and up turned hand dancing in the pail winter sun.
