I just bought a #4 hand plane. The hand plane has No 4 on the toe but has no other markings on the body. the blade has Auburn Tool Co on it and underneath it has a thistle and underneath that the word ” thistle”. On the bottom of the frog there is the # 1087 I have done a little research online and found some information on Auburn tool co in Auburn NY. The planes that I saw on these websites were wooden body planes. My question is does anyone know if Auburn Tool co made Metal bodied planes or could it be that the Iron is from an old wooden body plane made by Auburn tool. The reason I say this is b/c on the back of the blade it looks like someone has tapped the blade to adjust it. I only paid 12.95 so if the blade is from another plane It will not break me. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Plane ID
Yes, Auburn did make metallic planes. They were a knock-off of the Stanley plane. If it were mine, I'd sharpen the blade and just use it. Do not spend hours tuning and truing it up, it's just not worth it. It IS a nice user plane. As for the hammer marks on the back of the blade, someone probably did use a hammer to adjust it when they could not find a screwdriver to loosen uo the screw and adjust it properly. Blades for wooden body planes have a taper to them, the cutting edge thicker than the 'back' end.
