SWMBO has decided that she wants to be near her family. her parents are getting on a bit and she wants to help.
this means sometime in the next 12 months we’ll be moving fron the UK to MA
most of my tools are110volts with brush motors so i know that these will work fine but i have several; including table saw extrator etc… that have 220~240 volt induction motors.
am i correct in thinking that houses are wired for 220 volts??
the current in the UK is 50htz AFAIK its 60 htz in the US will a 50htz induction motor work on 60 htz???
i’m looking for some info on what i can and can’t bring with me.
most of these bigger machines are under 2 years old and it would be a shame to have to sell them to start over again.
thanks in advance

Expect the motor to run 16 / 17% faster.
Run as is or compensate with mechanics. (pulleys)
A lot of motors have 50/60HTZ ratings.
Affect on the life of the motor should be insignificant.
The motor may run a little warmer.
Who ever invented work didn't know how to fish....
The vast majority of your motors will be fine. In the industrial world, the way a 60 Hz motor is rated for 50 Hz is that it gets a new nameplate with a different speed and a slightly lower hp number. I'd bring it all with you, except the tv and video stuff.
thanks very much.
i was getting a bit worried that i'd have to sell it all and start over.
i've got kind of attached to most of it. and like i said most of the big stuff is less than 2 years old.

I'm from Massachusetts, if that's what you meant by "MA". There are a lot of small electric motor shops here that would be able to either tell you what to do, or do it for you. In my experience, a motor on a woodworking machine is one of the easiest parts to change out or modify.
The electric utility companies in Massachusetts pay large electric users to switch to high efficiency electric motors. The older motors sit in motor shops, for sale. A 3 phase, 5 hp 220 volt totaly enclosed fan cooled motor goes for $30.
The machine manufactures might be able to tell you what to do. Wadkin has an office in the US, and they speak British there. It's neat to call up someone in North Carolina, and have them talk like a Mary Poppins movie.
Good Luck!
Good luck Kos, we'll miss you on the Uk forums!
