Hello fellow woodturners,
I’m looking for some recommendations for inexpensive, utilitarian faceplates 3″, 4″ or 6″ to be used for a small, medium, and large home-made disk sander for the lathe.
At one time I found a website where someone was making faceplates out of large nuts and steel plate, I believe. There were some excellent recommendations for these faceplates, so I assume they were of good quality.
I am looking for inexpensive, but not cheap or poor quality.
Any suggestions would are gratefully appreciated.
Cheers,
Erick

I think Ben Strano did a blog post on a sander for his lathe... mayby it was a podcast mention... Ben?
Is this what you are looking for ? https://www.pennstateind.com/store/lathe-faceplates.html
Hi Gulfstar,
I've seen those, but I was referring to a guy who was handcrafting faceplates from an appropriately sized/threaded bolt and a piece of plate steel. They were very inexpensive. I won't be running at high speeds, so balance and precision (though nice), are not necessary in my intended application.

I could not find it on the tablet, easy on the desktop:

Hi MJ,
That article and the enclosed link was exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you !!

Sorry, it was long, long ago.
I bought some many years ago that were simply nuts welded to a steel plate. I have no idea of the source.
Can I ask, why do you need 3 sizes? I'd expect that you could just make one, and dobothlarge and small work on it. I use a 12 inch disc sander for everything.
Hi John,
Good question. I had the idea of using a larger sander (20" diameter) for rough work, and then down to a 12" diameter disc outfitted with finer sandpaper for finer work. You are right I could simplify my life (and I may just do that), but that was my thought when I posted the question.
The nuts welded to a steel plate are exactly what I'm looking for. Do you recall where you got those?
Cheers,
Erick
Ebay.. lathe face plates ,probably hundreds of them on there, various sizes ,threads and prices. Typically someone will want $10 and someone else will want $100 for the exact same thing. I'd aim for a top price of maybe $25 including shipping. I bet you find them. Sometimes you can bargain them down, actually you can often bargain them down. Stuff like that is sometimes on there for months with no takers.
