I’m looking to buy a molding machine but don’t know any worth buying. I know of a Sears model and a Jet molder/planner. I’m looking to do moldings up to 4-1/2″ in width, such as casings, baseboards and chair rails. I was told that the Jet model was a good choice but it onle takes knives up to 2″ wide. I’d have to do multiple passes with this machine. I’d like to do each piece of molding in one pass if I could. Maybe this is only possible with the larger molders. Can anyone help me out here.
Thanks kindly

The Jet will do larger profiles than 2" but the blades must come out. The 2" and smaller profiles can be done without removing the knives. There are three lock bars on the cutterhead, two of them about 5 1/2" long and one 2" lock bar. The 2" bar comes out, knife goes in this space.Since molding knives are higher than planer blades you can leave the planer knives alone.
I have this machine, I do not use the molding feature as of yet. If I had to do it over again I would buy the Woodmaster planer molder. The Woodmaster is more exspensive but worth the extra money if you are going to use the machine for years to come.

Along with Woodmaster, the two I know about are RBI and Williams & Hussey.

Paul,
Get the Williams/ Hussey. I ran one of these before to do small and large moldings. As large as 7" I believe. I have also run larger molders like Bridgewood and Weinig.
I would try to get corrugated knife stock when you tool up. The corrugated allows you to use the same knife library with a special head that you could mount in a decent size shaper. Thus getting tooling for two machines at once. Also check that the other molders (Sears & Jet) can do radius work. I know that you can with the W/H.
I recommend W. Moore Profiles for tooling, advice and service. Talk to Steve or Bill.
I believe the W/H is about $1500 but well worth it as you build the tool library. This machine will enable you to supply moldings to other shops if you so choose. I know that this has been a need for many shops, and contractors in our area of northern NJ.
Good luck
I live in eastern Canada and can only get a Jet 13" molder/planner ($1000), a Sears molder/planner ($1200) and a General Intl. ($1600). I don't want to do radius work, just do a few moldings, mostly casings up to 4-1/2" wide.
Thanks kindly
