Below is a link to an interesting article on the growing problem of Mountain Pine Beetle in Alberta & British Columbia and its potential impact on current and future lumber supply especially of lodgepole pine.

Hi LB ,
An unfortunate but devastating reality . I've seen what they did in Central Oregon below Bend OR, literally there were and are stands of dead poles , I think primarily Lodge Pole .
In So. Oregon we have some root rot disease attacking Cedar and Pine as well . First they get the rot then the bugs move in on them , like the opportunists they are .

We are dealing with a major attack of MPB here in Colorado right now. Could really use a hard early freeze to kill them hungry little bugs, but that is not very likely to happen. Besides whatever effect this will have on lodgepole pine there will probably be a big hit on tourism and everything having to do with the mountains. People who live up there or own a second home in the mountains are paying a huge amount of money for tree spraying and/or removal annually. Either that or watch everything turn brown and pray that it all doesn't burn.
