I’m looking for suggestions/help on some tables I’m building in mahogany. These are Colonial in style with (on the top) a center oval inlay and 1/16″ wide satinwood stringing around the edge of the top, about 1/2″ in from the edge.
I’ve used Minwax stain and PoroPac grain filler on the top. Is there a good, easy way to keep the stringing from absorbing too much stain and getting somewhat muddy looking in the end result? I’ve tried masking the stringing and putting varnish or shellac on it, which works OK and I’ve tried going without the masking and putting on the sealer with a small brush, which requires a steady hand for it to look good. Both of these take longer than I care for when I’m doing several tops at one time. Any suggestions?

You could always stain the top before you apply the inlay banding. You might have problems when leveling the inlay with the surface though.
Other than that, maybe build a jig to hold a small paintbrush 1/2" from the edges...kind of like a scratch stock, only with a brush- a brush stock.
