Can someone enlighten me on inlays? I want to put a walnut inlay of a duck into a piece of curly maple which will go into a table top. Any advice would be much appreciated. thanks.

If you don't have a book on the subject I would get one , your question is to big.
*Viaduct? You try a schicken, you find out vie a duck.
*Dan , I'll assume you're talking about solid timber inlay , not veneer. Start by sizing the thickness of timber for your inlay. Mark and then cut out the shape making sure grain orientation is maintained with the timber to receive it. Clean up edges and place on top location for inlay. Mark outline with a pointed exacto knife or similar. It may help to place a few drops of super glue to prevent movement while doing this. Then using a router with appropriate sized bit , remove waste to the cut line . Check fit , should be tight and require either clamping pressure or tapping to seat fully. Inlay should be slightly proud and can be sanded flush when the whole thing is prepared for finishing. The table below uses 11 different species of timber with just over 250 pcs. View Image
