Input please on built-in banquet seating
Hello All,
I would like to solicit ideas from y’all on a built-in banquet seating project that SWMBO has just green lighted. Please see the attached pic oakdining1 so that we are talking about the same thing.
I want to do a three sided built-in banquet with lift up seats for storage of our not-super-often-used big kitchen gadgets.
The breakfast nook is ~8.5 by5.5′ and looks like this (please see attached kitchen02.jpg.) I want to fill the three walls with the seating and hopefully be able to reuse the table.
I am not an official fine woodworker so my skills and tools are going to be limited. I am thinking that I would like to make the frame out of regular dimensional lumber held together with glue and pocket screws (which I have experience with). I would then like to face the banquet with some nice maple and stain it to match the cabinets.
Taking into consideration that the main tools I have to do this with are only a SCMS, a tablesaw (yet to be purchased but I did get the okay), a circular saw, a router and the super pocket hole kit (what ever the heck its called). What are folks thoughts on this idea.
Any pointers or points to some useful plans would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,

Hello Folks,
I just did a couple of sketches of what I am thinking about building. I would appreciate any constructive feedback.

madmad,
Just a cupala thoughts. The layout you've designed would appear to accomodate 3 people...where as 4 could be accomodated with parallel benches.
I have a comfortable church pew that I took apart about a week ago. The seat is curved and about 14" deep. Interestingly, the seat curve is actually a carve out, about 2/3rds of the way back from the front and only 1/4"deep..thought you might be interested.

Huh, I'm not sure why you say that? The side benches are 5'-6" long and the back bench is 8'=10" I was thinking two folks on the short sides and 4 on the long side.
Thanks for your reply

Madmad,
Based on the picture, it appears the back bench will be taking part of that 5'6" space...like maybe 24-28"...leaving about 40" for sitting on the sides? But when you factor in knee room for ehe person on the back bench that makes the side benches fairly tight for two people? ...just an observation if I was reading the numbers correctly..
Crud, you are completely right... dang right now with the existing table we can fix 6 folks comfortably. I was hoping to add extra seating space along with the extra storage.
Shoot, seems like I need to figure out a way to make the inside corners of the booth comfortable for folks to sit on...Hmm maybe if I rounded the corners? Dang, SWMBO is really sold on the idea of the extra storage plus fitting more folks in for the occasional dinner party...
Thanks, this is why I posted here because I knew y'all could help.
So with the dimensions I have now you think one on each end and three comfortably along the back?

madmad,
Of course I don't know your actual layout, but I'd probably focus on a design that took advantage of the 8' run on the inside...maybe an 8' bench with 6'x36" table and a shorter(height wise)bench on the outside...with storage on the backside of the outside bench..just a guess..
I've had some good feedback from the folks at breaktime on this subject. I would love to discuss several aspects with y'all.
1. There seems to be a lot of differences on what makes a comfy bench. We did a little study at the house and for us (me 6' SWMBO 5'10") we have some up with a seating height of 18" and seat depth of 19" and seat back that is 24" long and angled 10 deg from vertical. How does this sound to y'all.
2. The pull out drawer. Folks have suggested that I use fancy full extension drawer slides. I'm thinking that since this drawer will be deep (4') and loaded with heavy kitchen appliances that it might be a better to put the drawer on roller-wheels-casters. It might be easier for a novice (me) to do the drawer on wheels with guides as opposed to getting 4' slides mounted correctly...
3. Construction methods. 3/4" Maple ply and build them as complete boxes or???? How can I make the hinged forward back and how do I make it sturdy? I do not want to use piano hinges I would strongly prefer the hinges to be hidden.
4. Construction methods pt 2. This got sorta shot down at BT but it makes sense to me (the total novice so what the heck do I know??). Since I am building this banquet into an existing nook why not use the existing walls and floor. Why build the traditional 6 sided box when I can use the wall/floor as two of the sides? I was thinking of using dimensional lumber attached to the floor and walls as a frame to attach the maple plywood to. To me this seems like it would save on the expensive materials (the maple ply) and be just as strong since it is tied into the house framing. What think y'all.
Thanks,
