I canceled my Facebook account a year and a half ago and have never missed it. I have resisted other forms of social media. I see a lot of folks talk about photos/images they see of woodworkers posting on Instagram. Since I don’t have an account, I don’t know what I am missing. Just curious for feedback from those who use if for woodworking enjoyment. I have no interest in it for anything other than that. Thanks.

I find FB to be a cesspool of toxicity. I don't find Instagram to be this way.
I think the content of Instagram is generally neutral. Perhaps that's because it's mostly comprised of images/short videos. That also could be because I really just use it for woodworking and design, and largely follow woodworkers and designers. So, in general, the algorithms show me what I want to see.
There may be the occasional unsolicited piece of advice, but generally comments are encouraging.
Like FB, it's designed to keep you looking at the screen, so just be mindful that it can be a time suck if you let it be.
I never had a Facebook or Twitter account. It never appealed to me. But I do like Instagram a lot. I've learned a lot, seen some wonderful work, and it doesn't mire you down in toxicity. It's the only place I've posted photos for the most part, but I don't take pictures anywhere near as I should.
IG is useful because many great makers post their creations as well as build processes. You can choose who to follow, so it's pretty easy to tailor to your interests.
I have a FB account primarily for marketplace and a couple of groups I'm interested in. I don't post anything there or follow anyone.
If you are not on Instagram try it out, its not like Facebook at all.
It is photo centered with some videos. You will find most writers and editors in Fine Woodworking and hundreds of others that could and maybe should be. Whether you are into wood turning, boxes, shaker, arts and crafts, early american or artsy-artsy :) old cars, old motorcycles there is something that is your interest.
Thanks All. Was worried Instagram was another Facebook. Sounds like Instagram is different. I will give it a try.
This past weekend I signed up for an Instagram account joeleonetti1 I spent mere seconds agonizing over the account name. I'm very impressed what what i saw. Thanks all for the positive input. Now I just need to put up some images of past projects.
Nice. I look forward to seeing your stuff.
I've been up for three months under joeleonetti1
I spent seconds agonizing over the name for it :-)
I really like it. I've kept it woodworking focused in terms of who I follow. It's a nice woodworking connection platform.
If I were looking to run a business, I would definitely be connected on all the social media platforms. A blog and Instagram are enough for me as a hobby woodworker.
Buying views, clickbait titles, etc are definitely not my thing.
What I retire from my day job, I will do more woodworking and teach more college chemistry. Planning to enroll a formal woodworking school. On the bucket list is to get a photo of my stuff in FWW and eventually write an article for FWW. There are plenty of bucket pieces of furniture I want to make. I get excited about spending 2000 hours making something out of high quality wood; by not having to sell it, I can compeltely take the cost of my labor out of the equation and just make it the way I want. Life is good.
