Insufficient dust collection on a Unisaw
Recently purchased a Delta cabitnet saw. Single machine connected to a delta 1.5 hp single stage collector (8 ft. run @4″) . Naturally I removed the stock Blade guard/splitter, and replaced with Biesemier after market splitter – no blade cover. I am getting what I feel to be an excessive amount of dust off the top of the blade regardless of the amount of blade exposed, with or without zero clearance insert. additionally, I notice quite a bit of dust around the base of the saw and through the elevation/tilt slots. I was considering stuffing the gap between the cabinet and the table with foam or cardboard to help develope more draft/vacume around the blade. Is there any reason not to fill this gap? ….and yes the dust collector is plugged in . Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated . Thanks in advance, Gene

I think your expectations are too high. At speed there's no way the saw dust is going to even fall out of the gullets in a 1/2 revolution let alone be directly influenced by the airstream from the DC port that far away from the blade. DC's need volume to develop velocity so reducing the openings will probably hurt more than it helps. I have an Excaliber Overarm Blade guard with it's 4" boom "Tee'd" into the 4" duct going to the cabinet on a Jet cabinet saw with a 2 hp DC and some saw dust still manages to escape.

I calked the bottom of my Jet for the same reason you are talking about, too much saw dust on the floor. It didn't seem to effect anything except the dust on the floor. I think Elcoholic is right, you are still gooing ot have dust, just not as much.
Thanks for the tip. I closed up all the holes with tape, Now I've removed the tape with the result that it takes all the dust out of the cabinet.
Thanks to All for the prompt response and good advice. I Think You hit the nail on the head "I think your expectations are too high"........ I upgraded from a Craftsman Contractors Saw, it had a shroud around the blade with a 2.5" hose connector for a shop vac. With my 6.25 hp (developed) shop vac attached it collected most of the dust. I guess I figured the Delta collector and the enclosed Cabinet on the unisaw would contain even more. Guess I'll have to spring for the over arm guard. TERRY H28 ....... NICE shop !! in the pics it looks cleaner than my kitchen ! Do you really cut wood in there or just hide from the spouse. Just kidding, Thanks again to All for the replys. Gene

I agree that you are never going to get the dust from the top of the blade without a overarm guard with dust collection. You should increase the size of the duct to the cabinet to 6". That will greatly improve the collection. You can certainly close up some of the holes in the cabinet, but you must leave approximately the same area open as the duct diameter. DC's work by moving air. If you don't have enough openings, it will starve the collector. I did close up the tilt slot and did some extra sealing around the bottom of the cabinet, but that's all.
I run 6" to the cabinet of my Griz 1023S and 4" to the overarm guard. It works well, but still will not get every last piece. There is simply too much force from the blade ejecting the chips for every last one to be collected.
Here are a couple of pics of my setup.
