Hey folks,
I’ve got a hard maple top on an island I need to sand down slightly due to some minor wear. Only problem is that its in the kitchen and its too large (4’ x 7’) and too attached to move to sand outside. All my sanders have vac attachments but they don’t work 100% and I really don’t want a layer of saw dust all around the house. Any thoughts?
I could use a scrapper but not sure how smooth I can get it.
Any unique ideas for dust control? Thanks
Mike

If you place a large fan in a window or door of the kitcher blowing out as you sand the dust should be mostly contained in the kitchen. Between this and the vac collection you might avoid the dust film in the rest of the house.

How good is your vac? I have a Fein and the amount of dust that escapes is almost negligable. The WAP and Porter Cable vacs are also in the same league. You can also drape the area with 1 mil painters plastic and masking tape.

Yeah, a good strong vacuum hooked to a good random orbit sander. The sander's dust collection should should include holes through the paper, and pick-up around the edges. The DeWalt and Porter-Cable 5" sanders qualify. Darn near nothing escapes.
I would use a smoothing plane, make sure the blade is very sharp. Then use a scraper on the rest. The results are excellent.
A scraper will actually get it flatter and smoother than sanding will. You might want to finish with a very minimal sanding to acheive a uniform look. Do that by hand and the dust will be so minimal that it won't be an issue.
I have a cheapo ryobi ROS and a small dedicated vac. They do a great job together w/ minimal escape. You probably wouldn't have a problem at all w/ the more "elite" systems. Brian

Ditto Ecoholic.. I use a PC ROS with a small Shop-Vac hook up. I was going to build a down-draft table and the results were so good, I felt it was not necessary.
The scraper woull be excellent also.

I'm with you, althugh I made a downdraft table first, which I now never use. Probably just cut it up to get it out of the way. I use a 6" Metabo, with the Fein, and there is virtually no dust.
Mike,
Did you think about wet sanding it.
