Hi,
I recently did a major remodel on a Contemporary Cape on the Cape. ( Cape Cod that is)
We were thinking of doing some “built up molding” as described several months ago in Fine Homebuilding… but when we built up a mock up of the profile, we weren’t wild about it. (it was a 1X4 inch pine with a 5/8 inch bead, a 1 X 11/2 inch band around the outside perimeter, and a piece of Banding bringing the two pieces together)
I am wondering whether anyone has any recommendations of any books that include a variety of different molding patterns that they can recommend? I googled this the other day and came up pretty dry.
Bonus Question: Having never done this before… is it typical to use 4/4 for stool?
Cheers,
Cashmandoo

If you've got back issues of FWW, there's an article on the subject by John West in issue #129, pp. 78-81, which spells out some good tips on how to go about using store-bought millwork for good effect, whether or not you want to use the samples illustrated in the article.
I'm not familiar with any books on the subject, but there is also plenty of information and other examples of moldings available on the web. Do a word search in quotes for "Built up molding."
Thanks Bill
Here's a link to the article Bill mentioned. Also look at this article we published on built-up moldings.

All of the home centers have their own publications "Trimwork ABC" or whatever, "New decorating with Architectural Trimwork" by Jay Silber is ok, it gives a lot of good information on how-to as well as showing a nice variety of profiles and complete room concepts.
You might want to try your local mill. Okay maybe that could be a drive from the cape, I dont know? Out here in Colorado, you can head over to the local mill and the clerk can show you a nice selection of custom profiles that they put together regularly. You pay a bit for the set up of the moldings, but you can get good wood molding for less per foot than what you will pay for MDF at the home center.
I envy your cape cod, I was considering it for my little house out here, but we went with stained colors instead.
As far as a 4x4 for a stool.... If it works and fits your needs.... I am replacing the stools on all my windows with larger ones. I designed the reach of the stool to match the distance of my crown molding, so instead of using a piece of apron with the ends mitered, I was actually able to place crown under the stool.
