Hi !
I am new in the forum, my name is Joe, I am 47, live in Germany [ “the old Europe” 😉 ] and work as systems programer for OpenVMS. I have always been fascinated with wood and its possibilities and still wonder why I never decided to become a carpenter. Anyway, I have a goal… to make customized wooden lamps with some real great new technology, superbright LED’s. Appart from taking a course in November in how to use a router I am trying to get all sorts of information and maybe help and hints. Today I ordered a 1 year subscription of tha Fine Woodwork magazine. Unfortunately, there is no such thin like a magazine that specializes in woodwork. So I hope this forum will be a rich source of info and help me get started.
Regards Joe

Jrudi, welcome aboard, Have you been to Oberammergou? (Bavaria) There you'll find hundreds of fine wood craftsmen.
Perhaps there's some WW forums lurking about in that part of Deutchland where you may some share trade secrets?
Like, where to get Hornbeam and Lignum Vitae?
My forbears came from Old Germany too. and I've met hundreds of cabinet makers here who are superior wood workers having learned their trade as apprentices in the 'Old Country' Steinmetz.
Let us all know which part of Germany you hail from.

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome! I am from the small town of Ginsheim, about 3 Miles away from the City of Mainz just accross the Rhine river.
I haven't been to Oberammergau yet maybe one day...
You asked for hornbeam, I guess you mean the type of wood that we call Weissbuche, Hainbuche or Hagelbuche (Lat. Cerpinus betulus). Despite the name, it is not in the "Buche" family which is beechtree in english. It is actually in the "Birke" family which is birchtree in english. Does that mean you need a resource to buy or order it?
I don't know much about Lignum Vitae, just that it is a tropical hardwood.
Cheers Joe

Welcome, Joe, great to have you here! Pesonally, I look forward to hearing about your adventure with the LED's -- I think it'll be neat when they become a normal household item!

Gidday mate
Where can I find out about < superbright LED's > ?
M
Hi Malcolm,
I use http://www.dotlight.de/ and http://www.led-info.de/einsatz/index.htm unfortunately both sites are only in german. But I am sure you'll find plenty of recources if you google for it.
Take care! Joe
Thanks Joe
I'll go Google. A year ago I was interested in concealed lighting for a fancy desk and had no luck looking for very small very bright light sources. I have to buy on-line, and gave up trying to find someone who could/would sell me what I wanted!

Malcolm,
You have set me right on certain issues in the past-such as the interpretation and use of the word "dag" and "he's a dag, mate".
So now we have you as a Kiwi saying "Gidday mate"- I thought this was exclusively Australian. What's the buzz?Philip Marcou
Just trying to match those guys showing off their German.
You do hear 'Mate' down here in the south, although it's not as common as in Oz. Tends to be used in a slightly joky way - with a long a (Maaaaate) or when the person being addressed is not a 'mate' - with irony. Hard to explain, as vernacular useage sometimes is, eh!

Hi Malcolm,
I just found out that the one site I mentioned is also available in english. The button to switch to english can only be seen in the e-shop, here is a shortcut...

Take care... Joe
Thanks Joe
I'm not an electrician - are you aware of any on-line tech instructions on applying LED lights? We have 240v domestic supply here.
Cheers

Hi Malcolm,
in one of my earlier replys to someone from NZ i mentioned this one site http://www.dotlight.de/site/technik/wie_schliesse_ich_leds_an.php unfortunately the descriptions are only in german. However, I googled a little and found two promissing sites in english:
http://www.theledlight.com/specialtyleds.html
http://unclean.org/howto/led_circuit.html
the latter one seems to have the better info for you.
Take care ... Joe
240v to a LED and it goes POOF! Hope ya had your safty glasses on!...Sorry.. I had to.. Just me brain....
Hi Joe,
Open VMS! I thougth VMS was long dead (I left the VMS world at about version 5.2... Vax 4000) - wow you brought back memories. Are you an Ex DECie? I'm not but I run into them all the time. My office is currently in DECs old HQ the Mill in Maynard (if you're an ex DECie you'll know where I mean).
Anyway, welcome to the forum. Looking forward to seeing some of your lamps.
BTW I love the solid state lighting. Let me know if you find any low price suppliers. I'm seeing the new signal lights (Red, yellow, green) here in the states all the time now - so they are catching on.. They are awesome becuase they last so long and don't give off as much heat - makes them friendlier to wood...
Best Regards,
Mark
Hi Mark,
Thanks for the welcome! No, I am not an exDECie, however, I know where Maynard is, as I have been to a training at the Littleton, MA and Nashua, NH facilities twice, so I know a bit of the greater Boston area.
Btw. OpenVMS is alive and striving. But nowadays people and the media tend to talk only about the hype topics. We are still running some 50 AlphaServers... running V7.3-2 planning the migration to 8.2, though the number of servers is going down.
Regarding the prices of the superbright LEDS, I can only say, that some day they will be cheaper and even more powerful and efficient.
Take care
