A friend is using 1 1/2 ” thick ipe for a plate that a bathtub sits on. The plan is to use a tung oil and then wax it six ways to sunday. I was thinking he should look into surfboard wax. Anyone have any suggestions/experience with this? (tung oil & ipe, ipe and bathrooms, wax and water)?

I'm not sure I understand what you are talking about. What do you mean by a "plate".
If you are asking about a finish that is water resistant tung oil and wax is not going to do it. Neither or both will provide resistance to water or water vapor. Neither has any real durability.
A standard interior varnish or poly varnish will be much more water and watervapor resistant and will provide long term durability.
Sorry for being unclear. It is a wood frame that goes on top of the tub surround. The rim of the tub rests on this frame. Any particular poly going to be better for this?
