Hello All,
I’ve been looking for some side strap bracings (that’s my own term for them – probably wrong) like those found on old boxes and the “new old box” picture that I’ve pictured here. This is a picture of a Crate and Barrel box that’s selling for something like over $200. Can’t believe they want that much for just a fairly made rosewood box and I thought I’d try to build my own. BUT, I can’t find those side braces anywhere. I think these are iron but they could be just about any metal and I could antiqu them. I’ve sent this picture to Horton Brasses and Whitechappel and askd both places for either the product or who might have it and I’ve got nada so far. So, I’m turning to anybody out there who might have an idea. Thanks in advance!

I do not know where you can buy something like that outright, but anyone who does custom wrought iron can forge them . You would just need to provide any specifics regarding dimensions , etc. They might seem a little costly, but you can get some really cool stuff made, including hinges and or latches to match the straps. I came across this information while searching the internet for some custom wrought iron hinges for a gate.
I agree with the idea of having them custom made by a blacksmith, at least if you're striving for authenticity. If it's just for looks and modern is okay, then you might look around for Japanese tansu braces, or spanish styled corner braces. I uploaded some pictures of Japanese some "rolling tansu" (kuruma tansu) for a thread on the Japanesetools message board recently, together with some links to other sites with J furniture; you might see if any of that kind of hardware is appealing. Hiraide (owner of the site) could probably get it for you. The modern stuff is usually painted black, but it will rust without much problem.View Image

VanDyke's has a lot of antique-looking iron hardware. Since you probably don't have a paper catalog, the easiest thing to do is probably to go to their web site and search for "iron".
