Hi folks. I recently picked up 2 Stanley Bailey No. 6 planes, a type 13 and type 16. They are in very good shape and in prime operating condition after some clean up. Both have irons that are 2 3/8” wide. The chip breakers are also in good shape.
I want to replace the blades. Is there anything special about the blades or can I simply buy a standard Stanley cutter offered by suppliers like Lee Valley?
Second question: If I want to upgrade to a more modern (and hence thicker) iron and chip breaker like a Veritas, Hock, or IBC, does that cause complications? For example, will I need to find a longer lever cap screw to accommodate the increased thickness of the iron and chip breaker?
Many thanks.

There should be plenty of screw.. back one out of one of your planes to see how much. I have Hock blades in a few old Stanleys, never had an issue.
Thanks.
If you upgrade to a better iron, upgrade the chipbreaker too. New ones are vastly better than the original.
I've never heard of a lever cap screw being too short. You'll be fine.
Thanks. Will definitely upgrade the set.
