I recently purchased 6 of the Irwin Quick-Clamps. 18″ and 24″. 2 of the 6 clamps slip when I begin applying pressure to them to clamp something. Is this a common problem with these clamps? Is there a fix for them or should I just return/exchange them? Thanks.

Iv'e have quite a few of those clamps and they work very well, but they were bought a few years ago. So I'd say you got a bad batch, or they've gone with a cheaper manufacturer. I would say take them all back, if the other ones aren't slipping yet ,they probably will eventually. Brand names don't ensure quality anymore ,you have to inspect everything. And know the return policy.
Thanks for the info. Since I posted the first message, a third clamp has started slipping also. I think I will take your advice and return them all.
About 2 years ago they stopped production of the Quick-Clamps in Beatrice Nebraska and started importing them from China. Most of the Irwin brand is now produced offshore with the exception of the VIse-Grip and a few tap and die sets. What was American Tool is now Irwin they are the owners of many brands like Record, Bernzomatic, Vise-Grip, Strait-line and many others. Irwin is owned by Rubbermaid and profit for stockholders is mandatory.
Very interesting. Thanks.
Doesn't that just chap your butt? I bought a couple of 12-inchers about two years ago. Worked great. Liked them so much I bought a couple more recently. On the newer ones, the trigger starts slipping after the clamps have applied only moderate pressure. The old ones are solid black. The new ones have blue bodies. I hope Irwin is listening, because I'd really like a lot more of the old type, and would pay a little more to get them.
I have about 4or 5 sets of the irwin clamps and now that you mention it my new set (about a month old) does slip. I didnt think much of it as the first time I used them I was in a hurry and just grabbed another.
I have to agree I would certainly pay more for the old style. They're useless if they dont clamp, I mean come on, its in the name.
Gotta love imports.
