Is anyone using a single phase 16″ jointer? How annoying is a 3 phase converter?
I really want a 16″ jointer when my new shop is done (probably fall) but I don’t want an underpowered machine. I can’t get three phase w/out a converter. I was thinking of buying something older, like an Oliver, but they all run 3 phase.
Is it really lame to use a converter?
Any recommendations for a 16″ jointer (old or new) and/or a converter?

It would lame not to take advantage of a phase converter. What a silly question. I've been using converters for over 25 years and have been able to use machines most folks only dream of at prices many only dream of. I would recommend a Crescent over an Oliver and a VFD from http://www.factorymation.com for your phase conversion.
The Crescent is pretty much the same as an Oliver in all respects but the single pedestal base allows it to be move around without having to readjust the whole machine. The Oliver is much more finicky with it's twin pedestal bases. I've been rebuilding machines for over 30 years and have worked on many brands and have actually owned and Oliver 16" jointer for many years.
How would a 16" Norhtfield
How would a 16" Northtfield compare? I have an opportunity to buy a patternmakers model already rebuilt, new paint for $3000.00.
