Dear All,
I just broke my template bit. I converted a straight bit into template bit by inserting 1/2″ bearing & secured with a collar ring. After second thought, I think I should get advice from KNOT members before using it.
My question 1) How far should I insert the ball bearing?
2) How to check that I had properly thightened the collar ring.
3) Is it safe to use a modified router bit ?
Thanks
Masrol

We add bearings to router bits all the time. We typically convert many of the insert router bits into pattern cutting bits with the bearing on top. We get our bits from Hersaf and Ridge Carbide. If the bearing rubs and gets hung up you need a small clearance shim. Availaible from a hardware store. Checking tightness of the locking collar is pretty much self explanatory. If it slips it was too loose.
RickL has it.
I would add, however, that the cutter diameter from a straight bit inventory is usually equal to or slightly bigger than a standard bearing. As such they frequently cut the templet. Trim cutters are usually compensated.

Thanks Routerman and Rickl too.
Well I was in a hurry sending my post because the cybernet kiosk was closing early due to power supply interuption. Thus I cannot wait to read your reply.
Sorry for replying late.
Thanks again to both of you.
