Is Shaper Cutter Slippage normal?
I just used my shaper for the first time and I am hoping that I am doing something wrong because if it is not I will be very disappointed from this tool.
Here is my equipment detail: Felder 4HP Shaper turning 7800RPM, 1 1/4 spindle, 5 winged 4″ diameter carbide T&G cutter from Grizzly. All brand new.
Problem: The groove part worked fine, however, the tongue cutter cannot seem to make a 1/8″ deep cut in 3/4″ Ash without bogging down (cutter slips on the spindle) even at slowest possible feed rate.
Questions:
Is cutter slippage normal on a shaper? I have tightened the screw on the top of the spindle as much as I can.
I expected to be able to make a 1/4″ deep cut with a 1/2″ cutting height at slowest possible feed rate in one pass. Is this too much to ask from a tool this size?
Conversely, I would appreciate some comments on what kind of cuts you can make with your 4/5 HP shaper.

Hi, IMRANINDIANA, slipage on a shaper is not normal , your machine has plenty of power to cut your profile in one pass. I would check the drive belts and wheels, make sure the wheels are not upside down ,trowing off the speed ratios. my other concern would be a broken or misalined moter mount. check the belt tention to. good luck and keep us all posted on your progress.
it's not the screw that holds the cutter it is the pressure from the rings if it is slipping it means that you need to add more space between the top disc and the top of the shaft to put pressure on the rings(spacers or what ever you call them there)

Thanks for the replies Woodshaver and wop. Wop hit the nail on the head. The spindle cap has a short post on the bottom which fits the inside of the rings/spacers. My ring stack was about the same height above the top of the spindle as the post on the underside of the cap. So visually I could not tell that any thing was wrong and I had enough pressure where my light pressure hand test showed that the cutter was tightly held.
Another problem solved by the experts on this forums.
Thanks,
Imran
