So my recently passed Uncle was a well known Artisan from Michigan. My older brother just took over his family farm. It’s beautiful, (you should see the house he built and EVERYTHING he built/made! Truly a masterful artist!!!) anyways.. He has numerous OLD old Hand Planes and lots of other odds and ends. I grabbed this from a group of planes my brother offered to me, I am a newb, novice errr, also my first post! Lol. Anyways, I naively thought that the damage to the side of the plane wouldn’t be an issue and that I could restore(maybe?) the plane and use it! But after getting home and researching all I could in lieu of restoration of old planes etc. I realized that I may have wasted the time id already spent removing TONS of gunk and rust from this guy(lol, I quit halfway through/or whatever amount of “through” the images reveal, again, I’m a newb) so here are some pics. It’s a Renovoc HSB & Co (see blade)
UPDATE : anyone know the significance of the “4” under the tote?

Not sure if I’m double posting, my apologies, here are the images of the “4” beneath the tote
Also quite silly, I saw No. 5 and immediately assumed I had an old Bailey Lolol?! As if there were one Plane manufacturer back in the day?! Lolololol!
I wish it’s side wasn’t broken off Lolol. That’s a game killer isn’t it..?!
Hi, plane is probably still useable, though you might get some flexing in the sole from the side piece missing. I would grind a heavy camber on the iron and use as a fore plane. This setup is less demanding than trying to setup for fine shavings. By the way, you have the chip breaker on the wrong side of your plane iron. They should mate together coming to a point. No Idea what the 4 in the casting means.
Bwahahahaha!!! Omgoodness thank you!!! Lol!! I can’t believe that I did that(with the chip breaker!!!!) 😂🤣😂🤣😂 and ty for the awesome advice!
It will probably hold a door open, or keep papers on your desk. Trying to get that working will be an exercise in frustration. Planes of that size are too common and inexpensive to start yourself out at such a disadvantage.
It wouldn’t be a useable plane for most people here, at least it wouldn’t for me, but if you want to simply get your feet wet a d see how a plane works, it’s adequate.
You’re biggest issue is going to be sharpening. No plane will work very well unless the iron is sharp - and we mean shave the hair off your arm sharp!
