Hey All!
I am using a friends’ planer for the first time, a five year old Delta 15″. It cuts just fine, but seems like it need quite a push on the stock to get it under the feed rollers. Once the rollers grab it, everything is just fine. I have never worked on a planer this big before, so I was curious as to whether this is normal or not.
Thanks!
John

How much are you trying to plane off with each pass? You may be trying for more than it can 'grip' when the board hits the feed rollers.
I was only taking 1/8" or so out of some MDF.
I wouldnt plane MDF! you will wear the knives about 10 times fster than if it was wood

Also, most MDF is denser near the surface than in the center. Planing the surface reduces its integrity. And yes, it definitely will very quickly dull HSS knives.
I know, I know! I don't make a practice of planing MDF or even working with it. It was a special circumstance and couldn't be helped. I am used to a Makita bench-top so I don't know if the feeding is really that different, or do I need to adjust something. Thanks!John
MDF!!?? Omigod! Sure glad it isn't my planer. - lol
Yeah, 1/8" is too big of a 'bite' for any wood. I try to keep it at 1/16" or less and make multiple passes if I need to.
1/8" is too much, reduce it to 1/16". I sure am glad you're not using my planer with MDF. You'll owe your friend a knife sharpening and a thorough cleaning.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
