Is this significant in overall solidity of piece?
HI all – I am looking at his dresser which is nearby and also priced right, but I saw this crack/split in the back, on the left hand side. Does this split affect the piece’s overall solidity? Or will it just stay as it is, and not grow?
Love some info on this – thx – Marjan

Of course, I'm guessing but, that crack has probably been there for many years and probably won't get any worse unless it is exposed to some extreme temp/humidity conditions. Having said that, it would not be too difficult to stabilize it with some inlaid cross ties.
Should be fine. Pour some epoxy in the crack if you're worried about ti growing.
It’s fine looks like it’s been the for a long time just put some epoxy in it.
I'm by no means a furniture historian, but I would add a few things. First I don't think this crack is creating many issues, just because of the age. But I don't find it very practical to repair or touch this up with epoxy or cross ties. For both the whole things has to come apart.
Looking at the picture, I wonder more about the cupped top. It seems to have a clear visible cup to it, and I wonder if it is original, because the color is slightly different from the rest of the piece. It's still a functional piece, but look at that closely and take that into consideration when pricing this.
wow - thank you everyone for your posts. Just the info I needed. Thank you very much & stay well!
It's a nice old piece. I wouldn't do anything with that crack.
Thanks everyone. It just feels wrong paying 600 or 800 dollars for a dresser that is half wood and half MDF. I figured I’d be better off with something like the above as long as it’s solid enough. Thank you again!
