Is this spot for a splitter? (see link)

I need a splitter, and when I was replacing my blade, I noticed this little spring thing behind the blade. If I loosen the nut on the end, I can jam stuff inbetween the two peices.
This is an old Craftsman saw, (from the 50’s) and didn’t get a manual with it, so I don’t know if this is supposed to be for a splitter, or if it’s for a cupholder.
any ideas?
It seems to be in line with the left side of the blade. (left side if you were feeding the saw)
The link has photos.

Makes sense to me. Why else would they put that there?
Yup that is a splitter holder. It is a good one too; the quick release variety. You could pretty easily fashion one from steel or plastic. To adjust it even with the blade use washers. You definately want to put one on there. It is dangerous to use a saw with out one.
