I went to get my black walnut timber.. (6″x12″ x20 feet that I paid for my last visit) and they gave me a couple of hundred bd.ft. of Boxelder..
It has wicked red streaks against a cream background and looks stunning..
My question is, since they gave it to me do I have to “fess up” or is a little free wood allowed?
Hello my name is Frenchy, and it’s been ? days since I bought any wood…

Frenchy,
How would you want someone else to treat you?
Paul
thought they did, when they handed me the wood.. ;-)
Hey, if they gave it to you Frenchy, then it's a gift...But you might want to tip their garbage collector. You've probably screwed him out of a hauling fee.
Jon, while it's not FAS quality, the wicked red streaks against the cream colored base wood, looks stuning.. I suspect that if they don't degrade for the red streaks in Boxelder then this stuff would rate as #1.
I suspect that they were simply tempting me to keep my addiction active...
Of course I don't have any place to put this, and no I don't know how I'll use it.. Nor do I have time to work with it so it will be dried and added to the stack of wood with no known use..
Since that pile is really out of control just a couple hundred more bd.ft. shouldn't matter should it? What's a couple hundred bd.ft. in a stack of thousands?
Hi Frenchy. The first step is to admit that you are powerless over recieving and consuming timber of any sort. The second part of the first step, is to admit that your life has become unmanageable because of the luck you have with coming across mass amounts of wood you don't know what to do with over the years.
After you ponder this first step a few weeks, we'll get you started on the second step. Which is that you came to believe that a power greater than yourself could restore yourself to sanity.
Good luck and remember I'm here for you. One way to get through the first step is to immediately sort through the thousands of board feet of lumber and pick out the highest figured and grades, and ship them to me in Michigan. That way you don't relapse as easily, because if it's out of sight it's out of mind. God bless and good luck with the problem I wish I had.John E. Nanasy
John,
but if I did that wouldn't I be contributing to the same problem in your life?
I'm sorry my conscience won't let me inflict such trouble on you,,,
you'll have to come and get them...;-)
Frenchy, I was just jerking your chain. Boxelder with that beautiful coral pink spalt it sometimes gets is a true find. Too bad it's 4/4 stock and not 16/4, since turners love the stuff.
As for the pigmentation, spalt stains in most species tend to be indelible. In fact, when you don't want them (as in holly or pear, for example), they're just about impossible to get rid of. Unfortunately, in the case of the beautiful pink hues found in boxelder, they tend to be fugitive in the sense that they don't stay bright. They patinize to sort of a rust color over time...still pretty though.
Jon,
you mean that if I plane it smooth and put a coat of varnish on it in time it will just be brownish streaks?
Ah well, anybody want some boxelder?
Frenchy,
"Hello my name is Frenchy, and it's been ? days since I bought any wood... "
Maybe it would be a good idea to change this to 'hours' instead of 'days'...recovery comes in little steps.
I suppose if sumptin is given to ya...that ain't the same as buying. But, please, treat it as well as the stuff you buy....take that elder out of the box and let it breath...
You know I always respect my elders so I don't expect to ever put it in a box....? as for breathing, well........
