I just finsihed a set of 4 bookcases using Sherwin-Williams varnish, because I could not find varnish at any big box or other paint store. (Shades of things to come, all poly-u & nothing else?) I’m happy with the results, but wondered as I worked, whether there were any quality differences on the varnish that is on the market. Since I have more to build, I’d consider change if it makes the work easier & better. Any of you have any thoughts on this? WJPOwers

Varnish is made from oils, resins and thinners. Poly is varnish that has polyurethane resins added for scratch resistance. Poly varnishes are softer than most non-poly varnishes, , so if you're going to rub it out for to high gloss, stay away from poly.
Sure there are variations in varnish both within brands and from brand to brand. There are different formulations for particular uses. Some varnishes are made with natural resins others with synthetic resins. There are varying proportions of oils (and there are different types of oils) that relate to the hardness or flexibility of the finish. Some varnishes are almost water clear and white while others are very amber.
There are no standards for the formulation of varnish. Varnish is just a resin and oil mixture that is heated to a certain point where a new compound called "varnish" is formed.
In general, the better varnishes are the most expensive. Finishes are one thing where cost generally equate to quality. You will not find top grade varnish or poly varnish at the big boxes.
