I’ve seen walnut oil advertised as “food safe after drying” and was wondering about nut allergies. Anyone know whether there would be a problem or am I just a bit paranoid?

If you're really paranoid ask for the Material Safety Data Sheet. That should at least help give you some idea.

Doing things the hard way
chief,
Hmmm, this is the second post this morning that involves walnut oil.
I make lots of cutting boards and butcher blocks, and I really like walnut oil, but I stopped using it when I learned about food allergies.
But I also read something, about a year ago, that stated that walnut oil (or any other oil) is not dangerous once it dries. But for some reason, I decided to keep using mineral oil anyway.
If I did learn that walnut oil is safe when dry, I would switch back to using it, because I do like it better than mineral oil.
No, it should not be used on cutting boards or bowls. I've gotta run, but please do an "Advanced Search" here at Knots for walnut peanut allergies and you will find the thread(s) that have discussed this in the past. In one of them, I posted a couple of reference to illustrate my point. Please do not use these oils to finish woods! Mineral oil is the way to go.
