Alan,
I’m just at the point of having a garage built w/workshop below. My shop dimensions will be an L-shape with roughly 24×20 space available. Needless to say, the island idea looks extremely attractive due to space restrictions, and the efficient dust collection.
In reading the article, I didn’t see any mention of what the work top was made of, or how thick it was. I’m guessing that you used MDF for the island top, also. And, what thickness did you use?
Thanks in advance.

Lon,
Most are 3/4" plywood, working surface covered with standard thickness plastic laminate (Beige Formica)glued in a vacuum bag using Unibond 800 adhesive. The counter tops are held in place with 1-1/4" long screws driven upward from inside the particle board cabinet boxes. All can be removed for repair or replacement by removing the screws.
The counter top for the planer is a little more complicated, as it is thicker (3-1/4") to provide a recess to hold the planer platen flush with the Formica top surface. It was fabricated from two layers 3/4" mdf spaced with 3/4"x1-3/4" poplar strips.
Good luck with your new shop.
Alan
