It is this time of year that make me feel sorry for all you southern folk with no sugar maples. Being out in the shop and boiling down maple sap to maple syurp……………… ummmmmmmm good stuff. Bet you all wish you were here, huh?

John,
Guess you've never been to the Sugar Maple Festival in Highland County, here in VA. This past weekend, and the one before. It is a neat process. When my oldest boy was a webelo scout, the den made syrup from the sap collected from a single tree on one of the kids' farm. Each boy ended up with about 1/2 pt of syrup for our efforts. We cooked it down in an iron kettle, over a wood fire. Boys thought it great fun.
Saw a cartoon once, of a fellow talking on the pohone to his lumber dealer.
"Well, I won't say that last shipment of maple you sent me was green, but we ended up with 1800 bd feet of lumber, and 20 gals of syrup!"
MMM...buckwheat cakes and maple syrup!
Cheers,
Ray
Oh gawd........thats beautiful!!

Funny the subject should come up. My son, my father and myself just finished tapping (we have about 1000 holes drilled this year - 350 buckets and the rest on tubing). Dad just mentioned that we have the first sap to boil and the pans are not quite clean. One solution to that problem is to clean up using the sap and put the first syrup in barrels. Here in New York state, we call that stuff "Vermont Maple Syrup". Only the best can be called "New York Maple Syrup".
yup...thats why I live in wunnerfull Tax Free NH..................not Vermont where only New Yorkers on a trust fund can afford to live.
It is a good time of the year isnt it though. The trees give off the nectar of the gods, the birds sing in the morning and the pathh to the shop, although muddy, is clear of ice. yessa........love it up heya

Yup, I know what you mean. My uncle and I got trees tapped all over, with just tubing and tanks, only a couple of buckets because my grandpa likes collecting them by himself. Got a special attachment to the suger house to boil more sap at one time, speeds it up about half again, and that's good. Though this season is a late start here in Michigan, but we are hoping the season will be good. I like toward the end, when the syrup is darker and more flavorful. Oh, yeah!

If you were any kind of decent yankee you would put some of that up on the forum for sale. by the way did you play Dahrmas father on TV
Now 8, I am a decent guy but the Food and Drug boys ( I believe maple syurp qualifies as both because it is addicting) might have a problem with my somewhat less than pristine boiling enviroment. The pic is Mr Majestick.....127" in circ. at 4' . That one tree puts out 8 gallons of sap every day and a half which comes out to just under a quart of syurp. My wife delights in telling her family that I am making syurp so she can give it all away. "If Mumma aint happy, aint no one happy"Wicked Decent Woodworks (oldest wood working shop in NH)

Boxelder is a member of the maple family It has these really wild red streaks in the white wood and I always wondered if it had a differant flavor..
Golly,
I'll make book that your "poor frozen butt" has never known the taste of pure fresh Saguaro Cactus Honey :-)

Hiya :-)
No, I'm really talkin' about that honest golden honey from bees that gather nectar from those huge and ever-so-lovely white Arizona State flowers that grow on those towering Saguaro cacti. There's just pure sweetness (and zero alcohol -- and even fewer worms) involved. The Saguaro bloom in May.
You're thinking of that bottled stuff from down south in Taco-Town that gets distilled from the juice of a far less noble desert-dwelling plant of the awesome SouthWest. (Honey Bees don't mess with that process :-) & no, I'm not mistaking Mescal with Tequila -- much less Honey.)
BTW, I AM looking forward to August -- it begins to cool down to 110 F by then :-)
