I am trying to achieve “four square by hand” and have read about the process of using a (1) scrub plane, then (2) jack plane, and (3) jointer plane.
I have decided to purchase a scrub plane. However, I cannot afford both a jack plane and jointer plane at this point. I have read various articles where people mention how little they use one or the other. Have they replaced the jointer with a machine? Is the jack plane not as useful as the jointer?
Which one will I get more use from as a beginning woodwork not purchasing power tools? — In general, I plan to work with smaller pieces of wood while getting started.
Thanks for the help.

I will start by direction you to an answer I did in June of 2006 titled Hand Plane Purchase. I have an attachment on the history of the plane which will answer most of your questions (probably in more detail that you want) on what plane is used when.
The short answer to your question is to buy the scrub and the jack. The jointer is only used for planing the edges of boards for glue up of panels.
