japan woodwork courses and apprentiships
Hello everybody,
I’m from Belgium and am very interested in japanese woodworking and mastering the japanese woodworking tools. I’ve read in a book on workbenches that a guy called Svenson did and apprentiship with Makoto Imai. Are there any people who can help me on the subject of long term courses or apprentiships {preferably apprentiships as i’m not very rich}. Any ideas would be welcome.

At Laney college in Oakland California they have a one semester class in Japanese handtool and wood working. It would take you 18 weeks to take the course but it is a community college so the cost is pretty low even for out of state or overseas students. The website is as follows for this school systems. http://www.peralta.cc.ca.us I have not taken this insturctors classes yet but have meet him and he is a good teacher.
Hope that is of help.

Is it correct that the course is only on saterdays at laney ? If so that would be an enormous waste of time for me, i would have 6 days in the week with nothing to do, that would make the course quite expensive i think. I mailed the admissions departement and am waiting for their answer.
I would'nt mind staying for a long time in the states, but i would like an intensive teaching.
They have other woodworking classes during the week including classes such as furniture design, and many classes directed toward commerical cabinet making for such things as kitchen cabinets. Take a look at the collage class catolog on the website I had in the earlier reply. Hope you find something that worksTroy
