Has anyone else noticed the price of the JET AFS-1000B air filtration system recently shot up? It had been priced between $179 and $199 on Amazon for about a year. (I was thinking of buying.) About a month ago the price shot up to $249. What gives? I have real trouble spending an extra $70 for the same product.

Jet raised a bunch of prices recently. Grizzly has indicated they will also. Everyone's blaming the increasing price of steel. Personally, I don't see how there can be enough steel in an air filter to justify a $50 increase, but what do I know?
Fuel costs have driven up prices on everything. I'm not going to be surprised to see a 20% increase in transportation/delivery charges over the next twelve months.Leon Jester

It's not just Jet, Powermatic, Delta and others have had price increases. China's rapidly growing appetite for steel, aluminum, oil, and energy in general has put strong upward pressure on prices. I recently bought a piece of 6061 aluminum bar stock (1/4" x 12" x 8')- it cost $103!! All in all, woodworkers have it pretty good. A Delta contractor's saw for example, cost no more than it did twenty years ago and the latest imported versions actually cost less. That's the good news but the bad is that there's very little left in the way of American made stationary power equipment.

I suspect that companies have put off price increases for as long as they could, not wanting to decrease an already depressed market further. When the time comes they can't wait any longer, they'll probably institute enough of an increase to make up for the delay and cover 'em for awhile so as not to get in the same bind again.
The increase on the demand side of the equation due to China's growth is very real, as is the impact of rising fuel costs. Some construction materials are also being affected by rebuilding in Iraq.
The item costs what it costs. Rest assured, they're not "price gouging."
