Teager,
Cool!
I'm starting to think you're under some kind of band saw curse. Under what circumstances did it break? Where is the shaft broken? Does the break look like a series of scallops working out from a single point with a separate "broken" area outside the scallops?
This is all just curiosity as it should not have broken. Jet should give you a new shaft and the corresponding bearings without regard to the age of the saw. If you're not familiar with bearing replacement, they should help you with that too.
Pete
You know, Pete, up until you posted this paragraph:"This is all just curiosity as it should not have broken. Jet should give you a new shaft and the corresponding bearings without regard to the age of the saw. If you're not familiar with bearing replacement, they should help you with that too." One could have assumed you were interested in helping Teager...but with this piece of hogwash- you just proved you ain't nothing but an instigator.
Go ahead and call GM about a 15 year old truck that has an axle shaft break, and DEMAND they replace it, "because it shouldn't have broken"... I can hear the laughing from here......think I'm wrong?..well, that's just the 'favor' you did for Teager if he should follow your advice and call JET and demand a new shaft- free...no matter how old the saw is...
Mom always said, "It's better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt."
Psst.. your mouth is wide open.
Hopefully Teager has better sense than you do.
Wow, I'm an instigator?A bandsaw shaft should be an unlikely part to break, and Jet hasn't been around long enought that I'd consider any of their machines old. This sounds to me like an internal flaw that ran out over time.Pete
Pete,In response to your statement, only a trained metallugist would be able to determine the cause of the shaft failure. As far as Jet replacing the part, I would venture to say that there is a stated warranty with limited liability concerning parts and workmanship. As my esteemed southern mud wallower said, GM isn't going to give you a new axle after the warranty is up.Jim
I wouldn't expect a new car axle of course. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a failure of this magnitude would be considered reasonable by some as more woodworking machines have become throwaway items. My 1949 Delta band saw easily has another 50 years in it, but machines of that era were built to a different standard.Pete

Hey, folks, in post 31625.1 , Teager has asked "what is the best bandsaw?" To me this implies s/he has no bandsaw.
The question Teager asked in the current thread is "Has any broken the lower shaft," opposed to stating "today I broke the lower shaft." So perhaps Teager has read how Jet has beefed up the shafts on its new versions, and wants to know whether anyone has actually broken the lower shaft--perhaps Teager found a used one of the earlier version for sale.
Just a thought.
To answer the question: No, I haven't broken a lower shaft on a Jet 18"; I bought mine used, it has the older shafts. I usually reduce blade tension after using the saw.
Yes, but in post:
http://forums.taunton.com/fw-knots/messages?msg=30903.1
Teager mentioned owning the JET 18-inch BS and inquired about upgrading the motor.
Follow the thread, he was using the 1-inch Laguna blade. If he tried to tension it too much.
It canna take the strain Captain!
So who knows??

Doh!
I had taken a quick look for a thread of previous problems. But, I had seen that thread that you referenced--and had settings to show only unread messages, so I didn't get the refresher.
That's why old farts like me shouldn't be allowed to play with new technology. Even if we're successful, we can't remember what it's for, anyhow.
