Can't talk to the cyclone, but I've had the Jet canister filter for almost two years now -- and am loving it. Sucks up everything I've thrown at it, even with some very long runs...
[hmmm, what I said didn't make sense]
I like the idea of a canister, if the budget permits, but it will be fixed in your shop. The canister can be moved around if you want. Which canister are you looking at?

thats the thing, if i go with the canister its is to save money. i guess i would get the 650 canister for 349.
"i guess i would get the 650 canister for 349." Ooooo, that's a 1 HP machine, 650 CFM. Sure you don't want a little more zooomph than that? What type of saw do you have (contractor vs. cabinet)? Do you have a bandsaw? A disc/belt sander? Personally, I wouldn't go for anything smaller than 1.5HP. If you fall for that opinion <grin> then there are probably 2 questions that need answers to decide whether to get a canister or a cyclone system:
Is there something inherent in the design of one or the other than makes it more efficient or better, given equal HP?
Will you need, or do you want to provide for, portability?
The 1.5HP Jet will still save you money over the PSI cyclone. It may be easier to clean the Jet canister than it is the Tempest catridges, I dunno.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
I have a Jet 1 HP. and use one of them cyclone plastic lids on a metal garbage can. Works fine for me but I only use it for one tool at a time. Also I'm not sure you can use a fine micron filter on a 1 HP. unit. I think Rockler has the 1 HP for 199.00 on sale this month.
I am SURE you would be better off with that fancy cyclone but big bucks. I'm OK with what I have but the 1.5 HP or larger is better. Don't forget what it costs to operate those big HP units. Think about something a little less expensive and get one of them hanging air filters with it.
Just me..
