Hi all,
If your interested in antique Stanley tools you should be aware of this long out of print book:
,Antique And Collectible Stanley Tools A Guide To Identity And Value by John Walter
One of the best books EVER! It’s been out of print for years and fetches over $200 for dog earred copies on ebay. I’ve had the pleasure to thuimb through some copies from time to time but never owned it.
About 2 years ago Mr. Walter posted on his site he was about to republish and I was on the waiting list. But so far no word and the sites he had are down.
Has anyone information on the reprint or not have to make $$$ on everything and be willing to sell a copy for resonable price..(less that $100?)
Thanks,
10saw

Don't hold your breath waiting for John Walter. Clarence Blanchard has a new book out on Stanley planes and Clarence knows his stuff about old tools. You can order Clarence's book from the book section of his Fine Tool Journal web stie at http://www.finetoolj.com/Booklist.html . It's a very reasonable $14.99. Well, either that or make me an offer for my copy of Walter's book.
I've seen Warmans...Not quite Walters...but what is!I have Walters price guide which came out a couple years ago which was about the time I lost track of him. I received several emails from him explaining poor health but imminent publication...then nothing.I hope all's well with Mr. Walter. His book is a monument of information.I'd love to make you an offer for it! But it's the time of year for getting for others so I'd be hard pressed to offer near what you could get for it.If it's a spare copy and you want to sell "cheap" contact me off list.Thanks,10saw
I have a copy of the 1990 second printing. But since you say it's worth $200US I think I'll keep it for a while and take better care of it. It's only got a few puppy ears.;-)
Dang! This is back firing! Now it seems I'm informing everyone they have a "goldmine"!!!I've been playing the opposite waiting game, waiting for the new one to come out and drop the price on then old....to no avail. I actually saw someone asking over $2000!! on abebooks.com. He won't get it as he's at the long line of others listed closer to $200.Are they actaully fetching that? I recall them going for about $150-$200 on ebay last I looked. But like I said anyone just like to pass information on at a reasonable price....I'm your man!Contact me off list if you have a spare for sale.Thanks,10saw
I've seen them go as high as $280 on eBay for the hard cover version. If you need price guides for planes, buy The Little Giant Stanley Book by Clarence Blanchard. I prefer his book much more than John Walters because his pricing is taken from actual sale prices of the tool in the Fine Tool Journal and are more realistic in range than Walters'. If you want the type studies of the planes you can buy a couple of books called Patented and Transitional Planes of America Vol 1 and 2 by Roger K Smith. Lee Valley sells both of the books together for about $90.00.
Well, I checked Lee Valley and apparently they sold out of Roger K Smiths books but the Little Giant Stanley book is available.
