I wrote to John Walters about 3 years ago, and he wrote back saying that his new edition of “Guide to Antique and Collectible Stanley Tools” would be out in 6 months. I’ve written to him several other times, and never gotten a response. Curious if anyone knows anything about its release. The older versions are almost impossible to find, and extremely expensive if you do track one down. I’ve had no luck getting any information, and I’m anxiously awaiting getting one of his books. Any help, as always, is appreciated. Thanks.

Supposedly it was to be out in Fal '04 which has come and gone.
I found a mention on some site elsewhere that it will be published "soon". Some mention of personal matters holding it up.
I recently noticed both his web sites are down.
I've only seen one copy of that book and it's amazing! I'd be happy to pay up front if it's a matter of funding. In fact I'd wager quite a few would climb on board for the possibility of getting a copy in the coming year.
I'd be close to spending the $300 to get a mint condtion hard cover copy but as soon as I did the new one would be published. But I've been thinking that way for a year or 2 now...

I'm glad to see that someone is having the same irrational thoughts as me. I also have contemplated spending way too much on a used copy, but I figure that the new one will be released as soon as I buy a used copy. I also noticed that his web pages were down. Hopefully someone with more info can let us know. Thanks for your reply.

If you guys are willing to buy a softcover, I saw this today on ebay for ten bucks:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13874&item=6147318439&rd=1
And thought you might be interested. If you're new to ebay I can probably buy it and send it on. (If you're willing to pay for shipping twice)
Careful! That's not THE ONE! This one is good but usually goes for about $40 max. It's mostly the pricing and models but none of the essays and stories I recall seeing the big one.I actully found a copy of this for $10 and sold it for $40.HTHN
To the best of my knowledge, there are two editions. One is from 1990 and one is from 1996. There are softcover and hardcover of both. From what I'm told, they are very similar, just the pricing and value differs quite a bit in them. I've watched several on ebay. They always start out cheap, and sell for lots. Wish there was some way to find out if the new ones are ever coming. His websites are still down, and he never responded to my last few emails. I even called him once from the number listed on his web page, and he said it was due out within six months. That was 2-3 years ago. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

I have the 2001 Pocket Price guide by John Walter titled "Antique and Collectible Stanley Tools" in yellow soft cover. Is this the same as what you're referring to?
Jeff.
Seriously.I've seen both and owned one. The one in the auction is maybe 50% of the info in the later one. No comparison IMO. The aution says 450 pages....I don't recall it being that thick. The other edition is easily twice as thick as this one for sale.Save up and get the BIG ONE or cross fingers with me and the NEW one will be out soon!N
Thanks for the advice. Hopefully someone will appear that knows something about the release of the latest edition. And no, the Price Guide is different. The book we're talking about is about 2 inches thick and covers all the details about countless Stanley tools and the changes made to them over the years. You can see all the changes different Stanley planes have undergone, and what years the changes occurred. I love going to garage sales and flea markets, and it's handy for figuring out the vintage of different tools. Thanks again for all of your replies.
