I am going to build a 6′ x 4′ kitchen table. I just want 4 legs at the corners of the top w/o any stretchers, or braces. I have several areas of concern:
1) depth of the apron
2) size of the legs
3) additional support across the underside of the table
4) will M&T joinery provide sufficient structural support for the legs/aprons?
Thanks,

Standard practice..use 3 1/2" aprons. Legs joined to apron with the option to remove them when moving. This requires a 45 degree brace at the corners of the aprons and a lag bolt to "suck" the leg to the aprons. Leg size is not important. go for what ya like. The 45 degree angle brackets can be purshased in metal or make your own. All the catalogs have the leg/apron brackets.

dlb,
I've had a kitchen table with those dimensions for the last 30 years...mine happens to be a double drop leaf harvest table design. Personally, the 4' width has been a hassel...3.5' would have been much better. The apron is about 8" in from the sides and ends, measures 5" and attaches to 2.5" square legs(partially turned). There is no other bracing.
PS, as DonC noted, the legs are attached with the 45's...
