I am building an entertainment cabinet which will incorporate a face frame. The frame will be joined with M&T. My question is how should it be attached to the carcass.
I’m thinking of simply glueing it and nailing with brads. Is this method advisable, or is there a better way? I will be hanging doors on the ‘bottom half’ (hence the need for the face frame)of the cabinet and the ‘top half’ will be open.
I don’t wish to use biscuits (I haven’t got a biscuit joiner). I would prefer to use a more traditional method, if there is such a thing.
Any advise will be welcome, thanks.
Best Regards,
Ricky Briggs.

Ricky,
Just gluing the frame to the carcass and attaching with brads is a perfectly good way to do it, if you don't mind seeing the filled holes made by the brads. Another way is to just glue without any other attachment (no brads, biscuits, nothing). You just have to be sure you have good mating surfaces (no gaps) before glue up, and be a little meticulous in gluing, and be sure it doesn't slide out of alignment when you clamp it. GP
*GP,Many thanks for the advise. I intend to make it a little wider and then run the plane over it for a nice snug fit. The reason I thought of the brads was to actually hold in place whilst I clamp to avoid it slipping, but I will try without (or just bang in one brad each side on the bottom where it won't be so obvious) as I think it would look better without the little 'dots'Thanks for taking the time to reply.Kind Regards,Ricky Briggs.
*Ricky,GP gave some good advise, the nails are only there to hold the faceframe until the glue dries. The real strength comes from the glue joint not the mechanical fasteners. For traditional reproductions I use fine finish cut nails and either let them show or fill them with putty (linseed oil, whiting and pigment).Stephen
*I agree that just glue is enough, but I prefer to drill a hole and stick a dowel in it, this is really just for looks. I also peg my M & T joints, weather I glue them or not, again, except in the case of a floating joint, just for looks.
*Gentlemen,Many thanks for your replies, all gratefully received. I will just glue it but will use a couple of brads to hold it in place for just to be safe.Best Regards,Ricky Briggs.
