I’m considering getting a JoinTech Smart Miter (http://www.jointech.com/smart_miter.htm) for use with my Unisaw. Was curious if anyone here had one, and what their experience has been with it. Thanks,
Stu

Stu,
I bought a Smart Miter about 3-4 months ago and am really satisfied with it. I was hesitant to spend over $250 for a system that, I felt, would only minimally improve my ability to cut miters, but now that I've used it awhile I feel it is some of the best money I ever spent. I make handgun display cases and had previously just used a power miter saw to cut the 45 degree miters for the boxes. This jig just makes it so much easier to get not only a more accurate miter but the same length every time. The only drawback is, I am limited to cutting a max. box height of 2 1/2" (I have a 10" table saw).
I called Jointech to ask a couple of questions, then mentioned I would probably wait to get a better price by buying direct at the the next Woodworking show. He convinced me to go ahead and order by phone by throwing in a free clamp and video. I recommend getting the video, it makes set up a lot easier. GP
GP,
Good clamp and video strategy!!! I'll have to try that! Have you made any picture frames using it. That would be one of the main things I'd be using it for.Stuwww.stubert.funtigo.com
Stu,
No, I haven't made any picture frames, but the boxes I have made all have mitered glass lids which I cut using the smart miter. Same easy set up and accurate cuts as making the boxes. If you are considering making picture frames, one advantage to the smart miter is that it has 2 separate scales on the fence, enabling you to cut accurately measuring from either the heel or toe of the work piece (in other words using either short point or long point). This gives you a choice of measuring for the cut using either the measurement for the outisde of the frame or the inside. GP
OK, thanks GP...
