I just got my first planer and jointer and now the knifes are starting to get dull. Can the knifes be sharpened and if so where? Do you just replace them?
thanks

What type of machines?

the 6 inch delta x5 jointer and the delta 12.5 inch planer
The Delta planer blades are reversable, and then you toss them after using both edges. Order new ones from Delta. The joiner blades can be sharpened, but you have to play machinist to get them aligned correctly when you put them back in. Ask some established woodworkers in your area where they get their stuff sharpened, and send your blades to the same place.

I bought a Delta 12" planer a few years ago when they were a closeout item. It came with two sets of blades, each blade two sided. It went against my grain to just toss these blade when they were dull , so I built a jig that held the two blades at a 45 degree angle opposed to each other so the sharp (dull) edges were coplanar. When my blades get a little dull, I mount them in my jig and just pass a stone across them a couple of times. I generally buy unplaned wood and run it to my liking and have not had a problem with dull blades. I don't expect these blades to die on me for a long time!
Maybe you should share the plans for your jig! Or take a picture of it and post it for all of us "Delta" guys and gals.

Don't have a digital camera but will get one in the next couple of days and post a picture. It's really very simple and easy to make.
Fred,
Was that jig your speaking about for honing the disposable planer blades recently in FWW...either inside or on the protective cover? I'd be curious to see your jig too...thanks
I haven't seen the jig you mention. I came up with my own idea a couple of years ago. Will try to get pix today and post tonight.
The X-5 knives can be sharpened. The 12.5 is a portable? I've never used a portable but I think the knives are reversible. You may be able to hone them on a stone but I don't know if they can be re-ground. Look in the Yellow pages under Sharpening Services. At $40 a set I hope you don't just toss them. I bought some for my Father at Christmas as well as some Planer Pals to set them with. He says they work great.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Yeah the planer is the delta 580 I think. No I don't want to toss them just don't know where to get them sharpened. Didn't think it was something I could do myself.
