Hi,
I have a Powermatic model 50 6″ jointer. Their spaces say the blades are:
6″ x 3/4″ x 1/8″.
Freud C350 blades are: 6″ x 5/8″ x 1/8″
Freud C390 blades are: 6 1/16″ x 3/4 x 1/8″
I.e the C350 is 5/8″ vs 3/4″ and 6″ vs 6 1/6″.
I have used the C350 in the past but was wondering if I should get the C390 which would be closer to the Powermatic specs and allow for more sharpenings. The drawback with the C390 is their extra width of 6 1/16 which may not be safe.
Anyone have any experience using a blade that would extend 1/32 left and right of the cutter head?
Or I can forget about extra sharpenings based on Fine Woodworking article in issue #195, page 98 based on the cost of sending blades out to be sharpened.

As long as the blades don't hit anything the 1/16 won't matter.

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES...THEY ARE NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING, BUT...THEY STILL BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN YOU PUSH THEM DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS
Have you actually measured the cutting head , I doubt 1/16th will make any difference but if it did you could simply grind it off one end of each knife .
I agree the taller will allow more sharpening .

On page 70 of the pdf. catalog the knives for a Powermatic #5 and #50 Reliant are 6" x 3/4" x 1/8" and cost $18.20 a set in HSS or $77.40 for carbide.
