Hi Folks, I am finally getting a bit of a hand on the dust collection problems in my garage shop even though I have a long way to go.
I own a Jet 1 1/2 HP collector and am presently just attaching a single hose from the collector to the machine I am using at the time.
My problem is the Jointer. It’s a JET 6″ (OK for now) but the DC port is a loser. Everything comes out from the cutterhead back to the infeed table even with the collector connected.
I would like to rig some sort of fixture for better collection but can’t think of anything that doesn’t get in the way of infeed or outfeed. I could really use some help.
Thanks! And a very merry Christmas to all!!
Brian

Bri, Check for clogs or jambs first. I know my jointer will blow black if there is a clog in front of the knives.
Hope this was some help, Lou
Hello Lou,
Thanks for the hand. I think I had it pretty well cleared out last time but still getting the "blowback". I'm wondering if I can't avoid that then some sort of shopmade box collector somewhere...???
I posted a pic to Dave' reply above. What do you think?

Hello Brian; I am interested in your problem also. It seems you should have sufficient dust collection. I could not find the picture you referenced.------------------------------------

Hi, Sorry about that... am having trouble trying to resize the photo. It's close to 3 MG at the moment...a bit big I'd say :)
Am checking knots to see where to get info on resizing. FYI it's a JET 6" mdl JJ-60S 3/4 HP. Have cleared it out but keep getting a chip storm. Probably something really dumb I'm either doing or not doing. Appreciate your help and patience.

Brian take a small thin ripping, a cut off from your table saw and prod up into the dust port up towards the cutter head and see if you can nock the chips loose. Also blow air in through the cutter area, while it is unpluged of course. You may be surprized that you accually do have a clog and just can't see it.
A lot of Knots users swear by Irfanview. I'ts free and works well. Here's a link.

It has to be a stoppage. I have the same set up as you Jet jointer and 1 hp DC and dont have any problems with dust collection
Thanks Sancho, Will check again. That's probably it. Brian
It has to be a blockage or a problem with the DC. I have a Jet 6" and a griz 10" (with the SC) jointer and the Jet 1.5 HP DC is more than enough. Good luck.
Thanks, Am going to take another look tonight after I get home from work. I'm betting you are right and I just didnt get in there well enough. I do run too long a hose though and shortening it may help too.
Thanks again, Brian
Thanks Everybody! Yep..I'm an idiot. It was a block just past the cutterhead. Guess I missed it after going in from the other end. That and shortening the hose from 20' to ten (still able to get it to the TS, jointer and planer) eliminated 90+% of dust and chips. You folks are really great. And thanks DG for taking the time to put the IrfanView info together. So far so good. Now on to the NEXT problem! (when it pops up).

Merry Xmas, Brian -
Can you post a picture of your DC setup? Is your DC the Jet 1100?
Dust collection seems to be one of the most common issues on this forum and there are any number of possible solutions to your problem.
FWIW, I recently upgraded my DC from a Jet 650 cfm (1 hp) to an 1100A (1.5 hp) and my problems with the planer and jointer disappeared. Your mileage may vary, but if we can see your setup, some of us may be able to suggest some ideas that would help.
Man..this just gets worse and worse. Trying to get the pic the right size but can't.
I have the Jet 1.5 HP MDL 1100C (Dust Dog technology...oooooh). Sorry. Am working with IrfanView and may get it eventually.
If the attachments make it through, don't bother as they are huge.

Brian,
Try this and let me know how you make out.
Oh, and I have a very similar setup to yours, I think. I'm using the Delta 50-760 1½ HP DC w/4" flec hose connected to Jet 6" jointer. It work flawlessly so yours should too.
