are you refering to the grind on the knife?
Mike
Yes, the grind angle.
After reading your post I checked new knives. They are ground at 40 degrees, both planer and jointer knives. This does not mean this is optimum, I do not know if there is a best grind angle. I suppose it could vary by material planed, machine etc.

I've been sharpening mine at 37 to 43 plus or minus degrees with different levels of success, so 40 sounds about right. And to Uncle Dunc, what you say is exacly the reason or result for the different levels of success, so I agree.
If I'm not mistaken, the cutting angle is fixed by the design of the cutter head, and the chips come off the flat side of the blades. The beveled side of the blades is just for clearance, and the exact angle is probably a compromise between strength and drag.
I'd agree with that one. I've never heard of getting a different angle, they don't even mention it.
Mikeplease excuse my spelling.
Dude,
36 to 40 degrees is the usual range, Delta jointers have used 38 degrees since the 1940's.

I have mine done at 35 deg., with a 5 deg. micro back bevel.
