jointer practise on a multi-machine
Hello all
I’ve just bought a Startrite K260 and I’m wondering what is the correct stance for jointing. If I stand at the front of the machine (where the switches are) I feel overbalanced whilst passing a board over. When the cut is done I have to reach over the top of the cutters to fetch the board back. If I stand beside the cutters the slot mortise gets in the way. Although the mortise table can be taken off the chuck doesn’t seem to be removable and it’s spinning very fast close to important fleshy parts of me, and anyway the fence is on the wrong side of the table, ie nearest me. When standing here feed direction is left to right. Does anyone have experience of this type of multi-machine? It maybe a design compromise I’ll have to put up with to get 5 functions in one…
thanks in advance…

Typically the mortiser is removed for jointer operations. As you noticed it gets in the way. Felder and some of the other combo machines have a special cart to hold the mortiser.
The Start-rite isn't found here in the states. I see them in the UK mags. Are there any Euro based forums on the combo machines?? You will find some combo users on yahoo for Felder and Minimax so you will find other experienced users there. I hsave seen some pretty good UK forums out there. There's a whole different bunch of brands you have over there that most folks don't know about in the states.

Thanks Rick. Also you have some very good suppliers, Grizzly for instance, unfortunatley they won't supply Europe. Ho hum. I'll do a search for the forums...

Dear simpsj91,
You may find some useful information on the mebabo web site The e mail address is http://fc.zindel.de/scripts/cuwp_cgi.exe_cgi.exe
you the select read option next to the title english 2918k
The above web address is the instruction manual download for the electrobeckum multifunction machine ,you may find some useful information which may be applicable to your machine
regards Charnwood
IT WOULD SEEM THAT A WEB PAGE DOES NOT END IN *.EXE
OK, I'm not good on computers but this makes me suspisious

PS
Anyway just incase I'm being paranoid thank you for you post

Sorry if you are having problems accessing the information. I have tried to log on again and have also been unable to access the instruction manual
Explanation The information is on the Metabo website the initial address I gave you was the specific web page
Please try accessing by using web address below
http://www.metabo.co.uk select down loads, then instruction manuals ,then woodworking ba, then change language to english in drop down box
then click drop down arrow of this machine, scroll to multi 260 click search .The web page currently appears not to be working I am not technically minded but I have previously downloaded the manual for my own use (could the problem be the number of people trying to access the site because of my post?)
Any way it may be worth trying again to access the site in a couple of days and see if the access problem has been rectified
Further there may be USA metabo site but from memory it did not have a section for instruction manuals
Another useful site is the United Kingdom heath and safety site
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/woodindx.htm
scroll down to machines and select the appropriate section
Please accept my apologies and I hope the above information helps
regards Charnwood
Please accept my sincere apologies for the terseness of my previous post.
In my defense all I can say is that computers baffle me, actually I quite like using them, but I haven't a clue what goes on inside the box! A few weeks ago I clicked on a so called web page that ended with ".exe" and after 30 seconds or so some little *"£$%^&* had managed to destroy the machine to the extent of £322.87!!
Anyway, spleen vented, I'm off to check out the info you've given me. Thanks loads:)
John
Dear John
I am still unable to access the instruction manual via the Metabo site.Currently there is a message in German when you get to the final step in my instructions I will continue to try to access the site and will post a message when the manual is again available
I am not computer minded and have no idea why I am now unable to download the manual All I can confirm is there is a message in what appears to be German when you reach the final step in the download process
I did download the instruction manual about 2 weeks ago as a pdf and can confirm the content is more detailed than the instruction manual I received with my Lurem 260 ,which is part of the same stable of products
I posted the original e mail address because of the number of steps needed to get to the final step in the download process
I do still believe if or when the problem with downloading from the Metabo site is rectified downloading the manual is still a worthwhile activity
Best of luck
Charnwood
Dear Charnwood,
Many thanks for your continued help. I've tried also to download the manual but with no success. I've since found that my machine closly resembles a Robland X-31, it actually has Robland switch gear, and that there is a very good forum on it at...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RoblandX-31
...all sorts of things on here including a fine depth lift for the table saw which I am vey interested in. Also Startrite have their own web page...
http://www.startrite.co.uk/
Although the don't seem to have anything here relevant to the K260, I've sent them an e-mail so who knows. Once again thank you for your dedication and help.
John
Dear John
Other ways you can grow your knowledge of how to use your machine to its full potential is to attend demonstration days for other multifunction machines Both Matabo and Record have demonstration days in England and I would imagine there are days in Northern Ireland(see Metabo and Record web sites for dates and venues) Alternatively look in woodwork magazines for the dates of shows, but first check to see which manufacturers are attending
I have learn,t a great deal from the Record and Matabo demonstrations and Metabo produce a dvd which may prove helpful (note the dvd is sometimes played a the metabo stands and it may be worth watching)
The machines may not be exactly the same as yours but many of the principles of using them particularly safety are transferable
Other Felder make multifunction machines which are top of the range In England they sell directly to the public and there showrooms may be worth a visit
Finally if I was in your position I would first Look which companies you can easily access in Northern Ireland I would then visit them in this order Startrite,Record,Metabo.then Felder
Note It is not necessary to make this a Qwest but if the opportunity presents watching and listening to the demonstrators from these companies will certainly grow your knowledge
I also contacted local college that teaches woodworking and they allowed me to spend an afternoon with a woodwork teacher who explained the detailed use of the spindle moulders
regards Charnwood
Thanks Charnwood
The spindle scares the absolute wits out of me! So much potential for flying metal... I've tried to enrol in night classes but because I work variable shifts I'll have to juggle how many classes I can miss without missing important stuff.
The Startrite people have e-mailed me so I'm pumping them for info as well
John
Hi,
It seems that CQI stands for Communications Quality Indicator which appears to be installed by some router software packages. You are absolutely right in that WEB pages normally end with .htm(l) and not .exe. .exe files are executable programs that run on your PC as are .com and .bat files.
I also would be leary of any of these files off the WEB. There are MANY of these files already on your PC and they should be there as they are installed by installation programs that you have installed.
I doubt that the aforementioned CQI.exe file is harmful, but:
When in doubt, play it safe, much the same as your woodworking activities.

Me again,
Startrite has a WEB site @ http://www.startrite.co.uk. I also did a search in Google, and is showed a few sites offering a manual for the K260................ The Startrite has a Contact Us selection that might be useful. Appears that they are in Ireland.
Cheers,

Many thanks for your help on this.
I figured out why I couldn't find anything on the internet. This is embarrassing. I was searching for startright not startrite. I am soo stupid!
Anyway I've e-mailed the company so here's hoping...
John
John,
If StartRite can't/won't help, go to Google and enter "startrite k260" in the search box. It should show several sites, one of which is:
http://www.scosarg.co.uk/index.cfm/fuseaction/catalog.product_detail/product_no/MASTK260/CFID/34615139/CFTOKEN/4990f15-806f5e9a-7bfd-498b-8153-2c8957120355
They are offering a manual, but costs L20. Sorry, don't have a symbol for pounds!

Dear John
I have just downloaded the instruction manual from the Metabo web site So if you follow my previous instruction flow chart it should now work
regards Charnwood
I have an old 3 phase Lurem C260 N and experienced similar problems, but not for long! I moved the switches, a fairly easy job.
Give it a go, best of luck.
Thanks
Now I'm on a roll here is another suggestion. I unbolted the morticer, fastened it to a 18 in square of ally with a hole drilled in the appropriate position for my big router and then bolted the lot to two of the largest angle brackets I could find. (Try horse requisite suppliers.)
You end up with a very versatile routing machine, add hold downs to the table!
Good idea! Trouble is I'd have to convince "head of finances" that I need a large router. She wants to buy a greenhouse. Wait a minute, what if I was to say that it would be for moulding the frames for the glass....
:)
Thanks for the suggestion!
John
Where are you located? Is Lurem still available in your area? I have one of their shapers and the end of the motor shaft is messed up (keyway damaged by a key that slipped out of position) and would like to repair it. What voltage does your machine use?
"I cut this piece four times and it's still too short."
Sorry but my machine is some 25 years old! The ref for the Arbre de Toupie was13 . 03. 04020 and the address was B.P. 1 61700 DOMFRONT FRANCE. You never know till you try!
I am U.K. using 440volts. Hope this helps.
