Hello All. I am looking to upgrade to an 8″ jointer with a spiral cutterhead. I live in Ontario, Canada. Options are limited. Does anyone have any experience with King Industrial Tools Canada. Have been unable to find any tool reviews or comparisons similar to articles written in Fine Woodworking tool review.
Thanks

Quality is hit or miss with king. I have a king delta clone bandsaw, it's ok. But just ok. Have a contractor table saw, again just ok. Had a right angle drill, quality was abysmal. I haven't looked at jointers from them. Another option would be Magnum industrial at KMS Tools, i believe they are basically general international products, kms took over. laguna and rikon should be available from elite tools.
Don’t hesitate, Busy Bee will deliver a nice Craftex to your door and it has made me very pleased for the last 4 years I have used it.
I have a J/P from Canadian Woodworker CWI and I'm very happy with it. Call Canadian Woodworker in Wnnipeg and ask for Cole, he's the owner of the whole shebang and a very nice man.
I am also in Ontario and have a six inch King Industrial jointer, a KC-65. It is functional but I am not impressed and have been thinking of upgrading for awhile. I got it three years ago. The fence is slightly bowed and the tables are not completely flat, although they are not out enough to cause any real issues...I just think they should be flat. The stop button also broke within a month and now has to be slammed hard to get it to work. I would order a replacement but there is no way to contact King Industrial directly...no website, no customer service number. You must go through a dealer for parts and there are not many. Anyway, my main issue is the cutter head and outfeed table. The outfeed table cannot be raised anymore than 1/64 or so above the cutter head and the cutter head cannot be lowered. This poses real problems for setting the knives because if they are set even a tiny bit too high you can’t just raise the outfeed table to eliminate snipe. This won’t apply to a helical head but the set screws used to adjust the height of the knives are either too short or the pots they sit in are too deep as the screws are always on the last threads to get the knives high enough. That said, it’s a functional jointer, it just requires a ton of finessing even beyond he normal annoying level of finessing required for a jointer. I like Busy Bee as I have a 212 cabinet saw which is great and would try one of their jointers, whenever I’ve had an issue with one of their tools (which happens), they have immediately exchanged it. I am intrigued by Laguna, though, and would give them a look. That will probably be my preferred brand for an upgrade.
The 8" Magnum Industrial from KMS is a good unit. Mine has performed very well over the past few years. No matter what you buy try to get a unit with parrellogram adjustments. After spending to many hours trying to adjust a dovetail style I would never go back. In my shop the jointer is at the heart of machining straight and square so getting the most out of it makes life easier.
